Phoenix One® Paulownia: Nature's Climate Champion

Paulownia Trees are generally known as ‘Empress Tree’, Princess Tree’ or ‘Bluebell Tree’ and it belongs to the  in the family ‘Paulowniaceae’, the order ‘Lamiales’. We use exclusively the patented ‘Phoenix One® Paulownia’, which has several unique advantages over all other species, incl.
* An extraordinarily narrow crown, which makes it possible to plant far more trees on the same area;
* It does not need to be cut back (technical cut) after one year, which makes it grow even faster;
* It does not bloom, which once again increases the growing period by approx. 6 weeks per year!
* And several more…

We conceptualise, prepare and manage our plantations completely natural/chemical free! This is not only a logical factor for truly sustainable plantations, it will also lead to higher results and yields for the wood, as well as for Intercropping, which generates an additional cash flow.

The Fastest Growing Hardwood Tree Worldwide

The Phoenix One® grows up to 6 Meters in the first year itself. In warm climatic areas, like Mainland India, it will reach a stem diameter of approx. 40 centimeter within 7 Years (most Teak trees: 15-40 Years). This has a number of huge advantages, from immense CO2 Absorption, fastest wood generation and profitability, and many more.

Image Title

Stores 10-times more CO2

The Phoenix One® has the by far highest CO2-Sequestration Capacity worldwide; more than 10-times higher than any other hardwood tree on earth. In most areas in India, 1 single tree sequestrates nearly 900 kg within its first 7-year Growth Cycle alone! From there on it will absorb an average of 100kg CO2 per Year. This incredible capability combined with its exceptionally narrow crown results in an unprecedented CO2 Absorption of up to 130 Metric Tonnes (m3) per Hectare per Year !! (average mixed forest: 5-8 m3 / year; rain forests approx. 15 m3/year)

Protects Natural Forests

The ONLY way, how existing & future natural forests can be protected against tree felling is to plant
a. Very fast growing trees that;
b. Are planted outside forest areas;
c. Which are intended for felling;
d. And generate high quality hardwood;
e. and the trees re-grow directly after felling;
The Phoenix One® is one of the very few options, if not the only one, which can effectively protect natural forests within a very short time! Therefore, we set up Phoenix One® Paulownia Tree Plantations & Projects outside forest areas, in accordance with the ‘Trees outside Forests’ (TOF) guidelines.

Very Low Water Requirement

The Phoenix One® has very low water consumption - just 10-12 liter per day, when it is fully grown. In comparison with other trees: It needs just 83 liter for every 1kg of wood that it produces - Eucalyptus = 7,000 L/Kg. When compared with regards to ‘Water Productivity’ – It produces 11.9 gram of wood per liter water consumed vs Popular: 6.79 gram of wood per liter of water consumed.

Enhances Soil Quality

The Phoenix One® is known to thrive even in rather moderately fertile soil conditions; it does not need very ‘rich’/heavy soil. In fact, Paulownia Trees are since long renowned to measurably improve soil quality with time; and even increase the groundwater holding capacities of the underground where they grow.

Image Title

Grows again after Harvest

After felling a Phoenix One® tree, there is no need to plant a new seedling – It simply grows again, within days! This is not ‘just’ a big cost saving factor, it immensely speeds up wood productivity and carbon sequestration. And this time it grows even faster, as the small seedling has the root system of a grown tree supporting it!

The Lightest Hardwood Worldwide

With just 280 kg per cubic meter, Paulownia Wood incl. that of the Phoenix One® Paulownia, is the lightest hardwood on earth! In comparison, Teak wood weighs approx. 450 kg / m³; Mahogany approx. 700 kg / m³. The weight of raw material is a pivotally important factor for literally every product; therefore Paulownia Wood, combined with its further multiple unique strengths and advantages has a sheer unlimited scope and potential.

Image Title

Surprisingly Strong

The wood is known as the ‘Aluminum of wood’, the ‘Lightweight Champion’. Its honeycomb cell structure (please see the illustration below) gives the wood its durability, flexibility and uniquely high relative strength despite its light weight - compressive strength along fibers - 281 kg/m³. The scientists at WeGrow, Germany enhance these qualities further, utilising highly specialised tissue-culture technologies, in order to achieve structured growth throughout the entire cycle, from seedling-to-harvest. This makes our wood unique.

No Termites

Another immense advantage of the wood is, that it is naturally termite repellent! It contains a ‘tannin’, which termites don’t like and stay away from. This fact is another pivotal banafit, as this opens up the possibilities for using wood for outdoor constructions; which in many areas is impossible with other kinds of wood.

Image Title

High Calorific Value

Despite its light weight, the wood has a high calorific value than coal – Phoenix One® Wood: 20.90 kJ/g; Coal: 14.64 kJ/g! Combined with the fact that it also has far less other pollutant than coal, it is a highly potential renewable natural resource for replacing/ adding to coal as a raw material. In addition – As the Wood does not take up humidity, pellets made of Paulownia Wood are far more stable/don’t disintegrate in humid weather conditions.

Image Title

Dries Extremely Fast

The Wood dries extremely fast, and without warping (changing shape) or splintering/cracking up. This results in no loss of wood during the very short, cost saving drying process. The wood of most other tree species often cracks up and warps, which means that a huge percentage of those wood types is effect lost/wasted and of no use.

Image Title

Unyielding Weather Resistance

Once the wood is dry, it takes up no/extremely little water from then on. As a result, it does not change shape in changing weather or humidity conditions; which makes it also the perfect outdoor construction material. Tested extensively at the Burckhardt Institute of the University of Göttingen, Germany, Phoenix One® Paulownia Wood showcases outstanding dimensional stability with no splitting, cupping or warping.

Image Title

Flame Retardant

Known since thousands of years to have an extraordinarily high ‘flashpoint’ (when it catches fire) at 420°C; most other kinds of wood starts at 220-225°C. With this parameter, it increases the fire safety features of buildings etc. where it is used.

Ideal for Interior, Décor & Veneer.

The beautiful structure and appearance of the Wood makes it possible to change its appearance to a multitude of other wood types, incl. making it look like teak, mahogany and other types of often far more expensive types of wood. As we grow the tree stem 6-7 meter ‘knot-free’, it is also the perfect wood for the production of veneer, in various colours and appearances.

Image Title

Low Thermal Conductivity

The Thermal Conductivity of Phoenix One® is twice as good as that of other average wood. This makes it the ideal wooden material for heat & cold insulation.

Image Title

Good Acoustic Properties

Due to its Cell Structure, Phoenix One® Wood has excellent properties and advantages for Sound Installations etc.

Image Title

Knot-Free Excellent

Phoenix One® Wood is an ideal resource for wood artisans to work with; be it for carvings, art work, and even household items, bowls, etc. Due to its very smooth grains and no splinters, one can carve, cut and process it for items of literally and shape and size.

The Paulownia Wood Market

High Demand with Increasing Prices

In recent years, the demand for wood as a raw material has consistently risen. The growing global population, emerging applications, and the inclination towards more ecologically conscious living are driving this demand. Notably, wood is increasingly replacing plastics, cement, and steel in various sectors, driven by the focus on climate protection and extensive research on wood as a CO2-neutral material.

The combination of increasing demand and decreasing supply has led to continuous and substantial price rises in recent years. Traditional mixed forest afforestation, which remains important and should be encouraged, can only yield significant timber output after prolonged periods of 50 to 80 years. In contrast, Paulownia wood, as a fast-growing plantation resource, offers an alternative solution. Within short periods, Paulownia trees can produce substantial quantities of high-quality lumber and other wood-based materials for various industries. This adaptability has resulted in considerable price increases for Paulownia wood, and experts predict that this trend will persist in the foreseeable future.

Concurrently, the supply of wood is becoming scarcer. The global forest area continues to decline each year, with more forests being completely protected or subjected to stricter regulations for timber extraction. Consequently, the volume of available wood in the market is steadily diminishing.
